Giovanni Mirabassi is certainly no unknown artist: the self-taught musician, born in Perugia, Italy, cites records by Bud Powell, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Jaki Byard, Bill Evans, Kenny Barron, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and Enrico Pieranunzi as his influences. At the age of 17, he had the opportunity to accompany Chet Baker during a performance in Perugia. Two years later, he went on a nationwide tour with Steve Grossman. In 1992, he moved to Paris, where several Italian jazz musicians, including Stefano Di Battista, Paolo Fresu, and Flavio Boltro, were working. Mirabassi achieved huge success in Japan, where his collaboration with Polish pianist Andrzej Jagodziński attracted a lot of interest: their joint albums “Giovanni Mirabassi & Andrzej Jagodzinski Trio” (2003) and “C-Moll” (2005) were among the best-selling jazz recordings of all time there.
On “The Sound Of Love: Tribute To Michel Legrand,” the piano virtuoso joins forces with Swiss singer Tatiana Eva-Marie, founder of the Avalon Jazz Band, to pay musical tribute to the legendary French pianist, singer, arranger and composer Michel Jean Legrand, who won multiple Grammy and Oscar awards. Mirabassi and Eva-Marie, who is often compared to jazz singers such as Cyrille Aimée and Cécile McLorin Salvant, manage – with the support of Alexander Claffy (bass) and Joe Peri (drums) – to create a true gem of late-night chanson jazz: elegant, intense, and unique!
