Eddie Higgins has long been a part of the American jazz scene, although he tends to be overlooked by critics and, to some extent, record labels in his home country. Fortunately, Japanese label Venus Records has jumped into the gap and produced several albums with Higgins.
On "Don't Smoke in Bed", he plays in a trio with guitarist John Pizzarelli and bassist Jay Leonhart. Right away with "Close Your Eyes", it's clear that the chemistry between the musicians is right. Duke Ellington's lush ballad "I Didn't Know About You" is often overlooked, but Higgins turns it into a dazzling gem. His own composition "Brown-Eyed Beauty" is reminiscent of George Shearing. A delightful album for jazz fans.
