“Standards By Request – 1st Day” and “Standards By Request – 2nd Day” are two solo piano albums by Eddie Higgins (1932–2009) that feature a collection of standards suggested by readers of the famous Swing Journal. The forty most-requested titles were presented to Higgins, and the original plan was to record material for just one album. However, after recording 15 tracks on the very first day – which was an extraordinary feat in itself – Higgins wanted to continue. So another recording session took place the next day, during which Higgins recorded another 15 tracks. No sheet music was used during the recording sessions. Higgins was such a talented pianist that his own arrangements and the tempo of the pieces – as well as his spontaneous ideas – carried and enriched every track. Producer Tetsuo Hara saw no need to change a single thing. The tracks are presented in the order they were recorded. Absolutely brilliant harmonic improvisation, elegant swing, and a magnificent sound – “Standards By Request” is a real treat for fans of piano jazz!
“Standards By Request: 1st Day” was recorded on August 29, 2008, at The Audio City Studios in Tokyo, Japan, and produced, mixed, and mastered by legendary sound engineer Tetsuo Hara.
