Eddie Higgins has gained a large fan base, especially in Japan, through his releases on Venus Records. Higgins' delicate tone and concept have often been compared to those of Bill Evans, one of the most influential and successful jazz pianists of all time. Higgins was in his element when he played melodies with groove and swing feeling, without overdoing it. With John Doughten on tenor saxophone, Phil Flannigan on bass and Danny Burger on drums, the quartet plays popular jazz standards and exciting original compositions by Higgins on this consistently swinging album. Eddie Higgins has played and recorded with many of the biggest names in jazz, including Coleman Hawkins, Jack Teagarden, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter. His discography as a bandleader includes more than 25 recordings. “When Your Lover Has Gone” was recorded on February 3 and 4, 1994, at New River Studios (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) and produced, mixed and mastered by legendary sound engineer Tetsuo Hara.
Venus Records was founded in Japan in 1992 by Tetsuo Hara, who previously worked as a producer for RCA Victor. The prestigious label uses a special mastering process called “Hyper Magnum Sound” for the strictly limited double LP of “When Your Lover Has Gone”. The records are cut at 33 RPM and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, which produces a powerful, present sound and is highly appreciated by audiophiles worldwide. A quick note: Venus LP reissues are only pressed once! Once the edition is sold out, the title is removed from the catalog and will not be reissued. Collectors should therefore not wait too long to place their orders: all releases of the “Venus Masterpiece Collection” are extremely popular!
