Two legends of modern music united: “The Tony Bennett / Bill Evans Album” was recorded from June 10 to 13, 1975 at Berkeley Studios, USA and released by Fantasy Records later that year. C. Michael Bailey of All About Jazz wrote: “These two exceptional musicians, at the top of their game, joined forces to create one of the most memorable vocal and piano duets.” The two artists, who used only vocals and piano, but no other musicians, selected the songs and developed the arrangements for this first of two joint albums. As part of the acclaimed “Bill Evans Remaster Series”, Universal Music Japan is now presenting the sonically impressive adaptation of this jazz-pop classic – as a limited, high-resolution SHM-SACD version (192 kHz/24 bit, Single-Layer).
Bennett and Evans met in 1962 when both, though not yet together, performed at a special event on the White House lawn during the Kennedy years. It was the jazz and theater singer Annie Ross, who had known both men for many years, who supposedly came up with the idea in the early 70s for Bennett and Evans to record an album together. Bennett later said: “I said to Bill, ‘Look, it's just going to be the two of us – you're not bringing your buddies and I'm not bringing mine!’” Bennett and Evans selected the pieces, worked out the arrangements on the fly, and chose the final takes. The music is some of the most soulful and human in that rarely trodden realm where jazz and pop music converge.
