A true milestone: Sonny Rollins' “East Broadway Run Down” was recorded on May 9, 1966, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and released in January 1967 by Impulse! According to The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, the album, produced by Bob Thiele, represents one of Rollins' most remarkable experiments with free jazz and illustrates “the maximum extent to which he integrated noise elements into his playing.” Many critics described “East Broadway Run Down” as one of the greatest gems of the American tenor saxophonist from the 1960s, which is certainly also thanks to the great line-up: Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums). “East Broadway Run Down” was Rollins' last album before industry pressure forced him to take a six-year hiatus. Although the piano chair is empty, the album sparkles with energy from the first minute to the last. You can hear that Garrison and Jones have been used to playing together since the days of John Coltrane. At times, you suspect that Elvin Jones has four hands and four feet, while Jimmy Garrison treats his double bass like a large guitar. From the outset, the driving rhythm challenges Rollins' tenor saxophone – a challenge he accepts and wins!
