This recording by Seiji Ozawa with the San Francisco Symphony dates from 1975. The idea behind Ludwig van Beethoven's 3rd Symphony was to write a symphony for Napoleon Bonaparte. The composer was enthusiastic about the idea of making liberty, equality and fraternity a universal principle in Europe. After Napoleon was crowned Emperor in 1804, Beethoven rededicated his composition to Prince Franz Joseph von Lobkowitz. It was premiered in his palace.
