Throughout his career, organist Ronnie Foster worked with some of the most important jazz and soul musicians of his time, including George Benson, the Jacksons, and Stevie Wonder, who wanted him to join him in the studio for the recording of “Songs In The Key Of Life”, one of his most legendary albums. However, few people know that Foster had already caught the attention of Blue Note co-founder Francis Wolff in 1970 with his incomparable performance on guitarist Grant Green's rousing live album “Alive”. This success enabled Foster to record his debut album as a bandleader for Blue Note two years later: the classic “Two-Headed Freap”, produced by George Butler.
The eight tracks on the album include three lively covers of songs by Al Green, Wilson Pickett, and Joe Simon, as well as five rousing original compositions, including the driving opening track “Chunky”, the gentle sounds of “Summer Song” and “Mystic Brew”, a highly visionary track that was later reinterpreted by A Tribe Called Quest in their hip-hop classic “Electric Relaxation”.
As part of the extremely popular “Blue Note 85th Anniversary Reissue Series” Universal Music Japan presents the sonically impressive remastering of this jazz classic by the legendary Kevin Gray, who is also responsible for Blue Note US's analog reissues such as “Tone Poet” and “Classic Vinyl” – as a limited Japan only UHQCD with OBI stripe. The original recording sessions for “Two-Headed Freap” took place on January 20 and 21, 1972 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
