Five years after “A Love Supreme” and at the height of the 1960s, “Karma” became the most complete iteration of spiritual jazz. The joyful, cyclical bass line and the sung title evoke memories of the legendary Coltrane album. “The Creator Has A Master Plan,” a 33-minute carousel ride between soul and free jazz that triggered many a trip in the minds of listeners at home and also brought about altered states among the players, was also well received by listeners who were not jazz aficionados: “Karma” sold better than many rock albums and earned Sanders a permanent record deal with ABC-Paramount, the parent company of Impulse. In addition, the album reached number 5 on the US jazz charts and number 188 on the American Billboard charts in the popular music category. The German edition of Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album number 4 on its list of the 100 best jazz albums in 2013.
As part of the popular “Verve Acoustic Sounds Series,” Universal Music Japan presents the sonically impressive remastering of this jazz classic as a limited edition Japan SHM-SACD in a mini LP cardboard sleeve with OBI stripe. The original recording sessions for “Karma” took place on February 14 and 19, 1969, at RCA Studios in New York City.
