After leaving John Coltrane's band, McCoy Tyner ended his collaboration with Impulse and moved to Blue Note, where he made his debut in 1967 with his timeless classic “The Real McCoy”. Tyner had African music firmly in mind when he recorded “Extensions” in 1970 – an extremely innovative work that took the audience on a journey of discovery into black identity and marked another success for this great pianist on his fifth album with Blue Note.
With “Extensions”, McCoy Tyner not only expanded the boundaries of mainstream jazz: it is the only album on which he is accompanied by Alice Coltrane, who plays harp on three of the four tracks. Furthermore, Tyner's compositions are given breathtaking musical virtuosity by alto saxophonist Gary Bartz, Wayne Shorter on tenor and soprano saxophone, Ron Carter on double bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. The heart of the album is “Message From The Nile”, which features a rousing groove, brilliant harp passages, and imaginative improvisations. “The Wanderer” on the other hand, begins with a slow rhythm that then transitions into a galloping swing with solos of unbridled joy. “Survival Blues” is another extended performance that gives each musician plenty of space for solos before the album ends with the impressionistic sounds of the final track ”His Blessings”.
As part of the extremely popular “Blue Note 85th Anniversary Reissue Series” Universal Music Japan presents the sonically impressive remastering of this jazz classic by the legendary Kevin Gray, who is also responsible for Blue Note US's analog reissues such as “Tone Poet” and “Classic Vinyl” – as a limited Japan only UHQCD with OBI stripe. The original recording session for “Extensions” took place on February 9, 1970 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
