When you listen to Lee Morgan on “A Night In Tunisia”, the opening track of “The Cooker”, it's hard to imagine that he was only 19 years old at the time. “The Cooker” was recorded just two weeks after Morgan's stunning performance on John Coltrane's masterpiece “Blue Train” in September 1957 and was actually Morgan's fifth Blue Note album as a leader. Bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones, both of whom also appeared on “Blue Train”, are accompanied on this outstanding recording by baritone saxophone master Pepper Adams and the great Bobby Timmons on piano.
The duets between Morgan's trumpet and the deep sound of Adams' baritone saxophone lend the familiar pieces a rousing vitality. After being counted among the greats of jazz by his childhood idol Clifford Brown, Morgan was ready to realize the series of recordings released by Blue Note that would make him one of the most charismatic bebop trumpeters of all time before his untimely death at the age of only 33. The program of “The Cooker” includes two original pieces by Morgan (“Heavy Dipper” and “New-Ma”), as well as the three classics “Just One Of Those Things”, “A Night In Tunisia” and “Lover Man.”
As part of the extremely popular “Blue Note 85th Anniversary Reissue Series” Universal Music Japan presents the sonically impressive remastering of this jazz classic by the legendary Kevin Gray, who is also responsible for Blue Note US's analog reissues such as “Tone Poet” and “Classic Vinyl” – as a limited Japan only UHQCD with OBI stripe. The original recording session for “The Cooker” took place on September 29, 1957 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey.
