Coltrane and Dolphy's recordings of their evenings at "The Village Gate" nightclub in 1961 were not originally intended for publication, but as an equipment test for the still young sound engineer Richard Alderson, who later made a name for himself as an engineer for Nina Simone and Bob Dylan. The tapes slept unnoticed for several decades in the archives of the "New York Public Library for Performing Arts" before they were rediscovered and published there.
The quintet with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Elvin Jones recorded eighty great minutes, including the only known live recording of Coltrane's "Africa" or Dolphy's strong bass clarinet in "When Lights Are Low".
