If one could own only one John Coltrane album, it would clearly have to be "A Love Supreme". In the comparatively short career of Coltrane, there is no second album that could have repeated both the commercial success and the excellent reviews - up to Grammy nominations. The 1964 album offers only four tracks - and all three are in praise of the gentleman without whom, in Coltrane's own opinion, he could never have created such music.
The John Coltrane Quartet in this case still consists of Jimmy Garrison on bass, McCoy Tyner on piano and Elvin Jones on drums. The combo puts in an enormous effort and if this album were longer, the listener would have to be supplied with a towel so that the drops of sweat from the musicians flying out of the speakers would not become too much of a problem.
