Henderson's illustrious recording career began in the early 1960s at Blue Note. He started as a leader in 1963 with his Blue Note debut “Page One”, a remarkable quintet session with trumpeter Kenny Dorham, who contributed two originals to the album and also wrote the liner notes in which he claimed that the “goat-bearded astronaut of the tenor saxophone” was “one of the most musical young saxophonists since Charlie Parker”. High praise that fully came to fruition on Page One.
Joining him was the stellar rhythm section of bassist Butch Warren, drummer Pete LaRoca, and pianist McCoy Tyner, who is listed as “etc.” on the album cover because he had just signed a record deal with Impulse! The hard bop-leaning album not only opened the ears of the jazz world to Henderson's exuberant tenor saxophone, but also helped establish him as a session man for other Blue Note recordings. The highlight of the album is certainly Henderson's bossa-influenced “Recorda Me”: a jazz standard today!
