When he joined Blue Note in 1969, “Brother” Jack McDuff was already a prolific and established organist thanks to an intense concert career in which he had been the centerpiece of his soul band since the early 1960s. Following his debut on the Blue Note catalog with the successful “Down Home Style”, McDuff released “Moon Rappin'”, which first appeared in 1970, one of the most ambitious, significant, and creative albums of his career. The program includes five lively original pieces by McDuff, including the sophisticated “Flat Backin” and “Loose Foot”, as well as highly innovative pieces such as “Moon Rappin” and “Oblighetto”, which later rightfully entered hip-hop history when they were sampled by A Tribe Called Quest as the basis for two of their most successful songs, which immediately became indispensable classics of the genre: “Scenario” and ”Check The Rhime”.
As part of the extremely popular “Blue Note 85th Anniversary Reissue Series” Universal Music Japan presents the sonically impressive remastering of this jazz classic by the legendary Kevin Gray, who is also responsible for Blue Note US's analog reissues such as “Tone Poet” and “Classic Vinyl” – as a limited Japan only UHQCD with OBI stripe. The original recording sessions for “Moon Rappin'” took place from December 1 to 3 and December 12, 1969, at Soundwave Recording Studio in King's Park, New York.
