“Sports” is the third album by American rock band Huey Lewis And The News, released on September 15, 1983, by Chrysalis Records. It reached number one on the Billboard 200 on June 30, 1984, and remained in the charts for a total of 160 weeks (!). In addition, “Sports” ranked No. 2 on the Billboard year-end charts in 1984 and produced four top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100: “I Want A New Drug” and “If This Is It,” “Heart and Soul” and “The Heart Of Rock & Roll” charted high worldwide, with the latter two singles also being nominated for Grammy Awards. The album was a huge international success: “Sports” was certified 7x platinum by the RIAA!
The band was formed in 1979 through the merger of members of the group “Clover,” which included Huey Lewis (vocals) and Sean Hopper (keyboards), and “Sound Hole,” which included Johnny Colla (saxophone, guitar), Mario Cipollina (bass), and Bill Gibson (percussion). A year later, Chris Hayes (guitar) joined the band, which was then renamed “Huey Lewis And The American Express.” Bob Brown, the band's manager, secured a record deal with Chrysalis, who insisted on a name change: “Huey Lewis And The News.”
