"One of the great Ellington albums, one of the great Hawkins albums, and one of the great albums of the 1960s," wrote the New York Times in 1995 about this joint recording by two jazz greats. Ellington and Hawkins had the greatest respect for each other's work and had been toying with the idea of recording an album together for many years.
It was finally realised on 18 August 1962 at Rudy van Gelder's studio. Ellington didn't bring his orchestra, but some of his soloists.
