The centrepiece of this double UHQCD is Johann Sebastian Bach's masterpiece 'The Art of Fugue', which Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov complements with works by the four Bach sons and two of the Bach family's favourite pieces.
Trifonov plays 'The Art of Fugue', a collection of 14 fugues and four canons that explore the contrapuntal possibilities inherent in a single theme on a quasi-mathematical basis, with impeccable technique. The pianist finds particularly interesting Bach's attempt to structure the work on the basis of Fibonacci numbers and the golden section. At the same time, the composer manages to infuse the music with incredible emotion and beauty.
"It is pure joy to listen to, it stirs the emotions and invigorates the spirit. Because it sounds so natural and yet considered, never intellectually brooding, but fulfilling in a cheerfully curious way. The really big things are circled and encircled, but mastered without buckling - so casually and yet always wide awake.
