The question arises what is more astonishing: Charles Mingus' request to his psychologist to write the liner notes for his album, or the jazz composer's plan to write ballet music. What is certain, however, is that "The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady" received the composition prize of the jury of the German Jazz Federation in 1964 and that the album is considered a milestone of modern jazz. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it #7 among the 100 best jazz albums of all time.
Also groundbreaking was the technique of Impulse! producer Bob Thiele, who used the technique of overdubbing, which was still young in 1963, to generate the sound of an entire orchestra from what was actually a medium-sized instrumentation. Sonically outstanding and musically impressive.
