Memphis-born trumpeter Booker Little was one of the most promising stars in the jazz world at the time. However, his career was cut short by his tragic death at the age of just 23. Thanks to his sensational talent as a musician and composer, Little made a name for himself in 1956, at the age of just 18, when he joined Max Roach's band and, after Roach's death, replaced Clifford Brown – another great trumpeter who died far too young. Unfortunately, Booker Little recorded only a few albums as a bandleader, including his amazing debut album “Booker Little 4 & Max Roach”, which was recorded for United Artists. The greatness of Little's inspiration, the rousing brilliance of his trumpet, his flawless technique, and his imaginative melodic lines are perfectly expressed on “Booker Little 4 & Max Roach”.
Adequately supported by Roach's powerful drums, the ideas of the great tenor saxophonist George Coleman, pianist Tommy Flanagan and double bassist Art Davis, the program begins with Miles Davis' “Milestone”, includes the well-known standard “Sweet And Lovely” and a fantastic reinterpretation of “Moonlight Becomes You”. The real heart of the album, however, are the three original pieces by Little himself: “Rounder's Mood”, “Dungeon Waltz” and “Jewel's Tempo”.
As part of the extremely popular “Blue Note 85th Anniversary Reissue Series” Universal Music Japan presents the sonically impressive remastering of this jazz classic by the legendary Kevin Gray, who is also responsible for Blue Note US's analog reissues such as “Tone Poet” and “Classic Vinyl” – as a limited Japan only UHQCD with OBI stripe. The original recording sessions for “Booker Little 4 & Max Roach” took place in October 1958 at Nola Penthouse Studios, New York and on January 30 and April 15, 1959, at Olmsted Sound Studios, New York.
