"Sunday at the Village Vanguard" is the first of two releases from the legendary recording session on June 25, 1961 at the New York jazz club of the same name. Bill Evans selected material for this album that pays tribute to his bassist Scott LaFaro, who died shortly thereafter.
The Bill Evans Trio is widely regarded as one of the finest jazz trios ever, primarily because of the excellent, equal interplay of its musicians. Instead of just rhythmically supporting the pianist, LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian contribute to a dialogue at eye level. This can be heard, for example, on "My Man's Gone Now." Belongs in every collection!
