Two years after his first album as a leader, on December 15, 1958, Bill Evans recorded his second album in New York: “Everybody Digs Bill Evans” – the release that established his legend. Recorded largely in a trio format, with hard boppers Sam Jones (bass) and Philly Joe Jones (drums), the release also contains two remarkable solo performances: “Epilogue” and ‘Peace Piece’, which was compared to classical works by Chopin, Debussy, Satie, Scriabin, Ravel and Messiaen and has been recorded later by musicians such as the Kronos Quartet, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Roy Eaton and Igor Levit. As part of the celebrated “Bill Evans Remaster Series”, Universal Music Japan is now presenting the original mono mix of this Riverside jazz classic – impressively remastered and released as a limited-edition, high-resolution SHM-SACD version (192 kHz/24 bit, Single-Layer).
Although Evans had left Miles Davis' band two months before the recording began, Davis was still so impressed by Evans' playing that he persuaded him to be the pianist on four of the five tracks on Davis' next album, “Kind of Blue”, which was recorded just a few months after “Everybody Digs Bill Evans”. The album cover also became famous: it contains tributes to Miles Davis, George Shearing, Ahmad Jamal and Cannonball Adderley, which were collected by Orrin Keepnews, the album's producer. Evans seemed embarrassed by this: “Why didn't you get a quote from my mother?” he asked Keepnews.
