The Hammond B3 organists represented on Blue Note formed a vibrant and diverse community whose stylistic palette ranged from Jimmy Smith's virtuosic innovations to Larry Young's horizon-broadening excursions. Kansas City-born Big John Patton was at the sweet spot of soul jazz during his illustrious tenure at Blue Note in the 1960s. Patton first appeared as a sideman on Lou Donaldson's albums “The Natural Soul” and “Good Gracious” and made his debut as a bandleader on Blue Note in 1963 with “Along Came John”. Perhaps the most unique – and certainly one of the best – albums in his discography is “Let 'Em Roll”, a fantastic session on which Patton expanded the standard organ trio lineup of guitar (Grant Green) and drums (Otis Finch) to include a vibraphonist (Bobby Hutcherson). Green had already used this lineup to great effect the previous year on his album “Street Of Dreams.” Highlights of the album include Patton's originals “Let 'Em Roll” and “Latona,” a delicate interpretation of Johnny Mandel's ballad “The Shadow Of Your Smile” and a spirited version of Hank Mobley's “The Turnaround”.
As part of the extremely popular “Blue Note 85th Anniversary Reissue Series” Universal Music Japan presents the sonically impressive remastering of this jazz classic by the legendary Kevin Gray, who is also responsible for Blue Note US's analog reissues such as “Tone Poet” and “Classic Vinyl” – as a limited Japan only UHQCD with OBI stripe. The original recording session for “Let 'Em Roll” took place on December 11, 1965, at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
