The two outstanding Belgian jazz guitarists Philip Catherine and Nicolas Fiszman (also on bass) played a celebrated concert in Berlin's West on the evening of June 13, 1982, as part of the Jazzbühne Festival. In the morning they played the same set in East Berlin - the two different worlds made a lasting impression on the musicians.
The audience was also impressed: they experienced a masterful concert that was met with thunderous applause. What the listener might hardly believe in the well-constructed and polyphonic pieces: the musicians improvised in large parts, as Catherine explains: "Nothing is written from beginning to end. I compose the themes and some harmonic bridges. Then we have a chord chart...and that's it." Inspiration, taste, imagination and friendship formed the basis. Catherine worked with many big names from the jazz scene, such as Charles Mingus, Chet Baker or Stéphane Grapelli, while Fiszman played with Sing, Charles Aznavour or Vanessa Paradis.
