“The Glocke” in the Hanseatic city of Bremen was one of Herbert von Karajan's favorite halls in Europe. Designed in 1737 on an octagonal floor plan, the location has been preserved in this form to this day and, despite several fires, offers one of the most beautiful acoustic experiences on the continent. On a special evening in April 1961, Oscar Peterson sat down at his piano in front of almost 1,400 spectators, accompanied by his two companions, Ray Brown, the “beautiful bassist”, as his admirers call him, and Ed Thigpen, one of the most sought-after drummers on the New York scene – The trio gave an extraordinary concert, which “The Lost Recordings” has brought back to life from the archives of the Bremen Radio and made available to us for the first time as an UltraHighQualityCD.
Oscar Peterson is a kind of self-made Pygmalion, a genius alchemist who always perfected his transformations. As a master of swing, he knew how to expand his repertoire and renew himself time and again without ever denying himself. His legacy, the magical radiance he bestowed on jazz, will always remain unforgettable. Frédéric D'Oria-Nicolas, one of TLR's musical treasure hunters, recalls the excitement he felt when viewing the original tapes in the archives of the Bremen Radio: “On our first trip, we found more than eight tapes, including this wonderful recording of the Oscar Peterson Trio at the Glocke. This concert was given in 1961. But a completely different trio performed that evening! We were completely enchanted and “My Funny Valentine” is one of the most compelling versions we have ever heard.”
To capture the warmth, colours and dynamics on this amazing UHQCD, several weeks of intensive restoration work on the original tapes were necessary. “The Lost Recordings” is celebrated worldwide for preserving invaluable musical heritage and for the unsurpassed quality of its Phoenix-Mastering™ restorations. “Oscar Peterson Trio – Live In Bremen 1961” is an audiophile revelation too that proves how outstanding mono recordings can sound!
