In the archives of the Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB), the Lost Recordings team unearthed a golden recording of historic value: Gaetano Donizetti's opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" with a magnificent cast of Maria Callas, Guiseppe di Stefano and Rolando Panerai, conducted by Herbert von Karajan. Recorded at the Städtische Oper Berlin on 29 September 1955, Callas shines as a technically brilliant and imaginative Lucia, and one gets a vivid sense of what it must be like to hear her live in the concert hall. She is accompanied by the RIAS Sinfonieorchester and the Coro del Teatro alla Scala, Milan.
Extensively restored over several months, the recordings have a sound quality that surpasses previous releases and represents the most authentic reproduction of this historic performance. Maria Callas would have been 100 years old in 2023, and this special release is a fitting tribute to her in this centenary year. Supported by the Callas Foundation, the double UHQCD is accompanied by a booklet with 80 pages of atmospheric images and texts.
