In 1967, Ella Fitzgerald toured throughout Europe with Duke Ellington and his orchestra. A concert in West Berlin was followed by a day off, which was used for an adventurous 'side trip' to East Berlin, arranged by Ronald Trisch, the head of the East German music agency, and Horst Lippmann, the West Berlin representative for major American artists. Ella played to an audience of 3,000 at the Friedrichstadt-Palast, without a large orchestra, but with a small but excellent accompaniment by the three exceptional musicians of the Jimmy Jones Trio; Sam Woodyard on drums, Bob Cranshaw on double bass and Jimmy Jones on piano. The enthusiastic audience quickly calmed the nervous "First Lady of Jazz" at this special concert and enjoyed a memorable, wonderful evening.
The recording was made on 25 January 1967 and the lacquer cut for the 33 1/3 rpm LP was made by Kevin Gray.
