The French saxophonist Barney Wilen recorded his first album as a leader in 1957 at the age of 20: "The Barney Wilen Quintet" for the US label Guilde du Jazz/Jazztone with the number J-1239. Unfortunately, this record was not widely distributed in France, as Barney was under contract to the French label Vogue. Nevertheless, his career took off that same year when Miles Davis hired him to record the soundtrack for the Louis Malle film "Elevator to the Gallows".
Sam Records now gives you the chance to enjoy this debut in audiophile quality and Sam's usual high quality packaging. Wilen is accompanied by Hubert Fol (alto saxophone), Nico Buninck (piano), Lloyd Thompson (bass) and Al Levitt (drums), who have played with such greats as Django Reinhardt, Lester Young and Charles Mingus.
