The Six Suites for Solo Cello are often considered to be Bach's greatest masterpieces and are a highlight of the Baroque cello repertoire. Countless artists had already taken on these works – with more or less substance. Now William Skeen, one of the world's leading Baroque cellists, is taking on the material. Skeen is a soloist with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Voices Of Music and was principal cellist with the American Bach Soloists for nearly two decades. He is a founding member of the New Esterházy Quartet, the Cantata Collective and La Monica. Skeen taught baroque cello and viola da gamba at the University of Southern California for two decades and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards for previous albums.
His approach on “The Six Cello Suites Of J. S. Bach” differs from other recordings: It is characterized above all by the fact that it is performed on two different historical cellos, one of which is a rare 17th-century five-string instrument used in Suite 6 – a new and exciting sound experience, created under the direction of San Francisco-based album producer Lolly Lewis. She founded her recording production company, Transparent Recordings, in 1980, which has focused particularly on performances with historical instruments in recent years.
“The Six Cello Suites Of J. S. Bach”, a 2-CD set, was beautifully recorded by famed, multiple Grammy-winning engineer Leslie Ann Jones at Skywalker Sound in Marin County, California. The mastering was done by multiple Grammy-nominated engineer Sean Royce Martin of Reference Recordings.
