It was indeed a happy coincidence: in September 1976, America's most famous organist, Virgil Fox, played a series of concerts at St Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco. Professor Keith Johnson was invited to record these concerts. He used his legendary home-made three-channel analogue tape recorder. After years of negotiations, Reference Recordings is now releasing the highlights of these concerts with pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Virgil Fox has always been controversial. Like Vladimir Horowitz, Fox brought a strong personal interpretation to all the pieces he played, and purists often criticised the liberties he took. But unlike many musicians who have found their way to the organ, Fox was never boring or inexpressive. Time and again he allowed the listener to experience the music anew, and the audience rewarded this with thunderous applause - as can be heard on these live recordings.
