With the project "Invasion: Music and Art for Ukraine," Ukrainian pianist and GRAMMY® Award winner Nadia Shpachenko found a way to address the horrors of war in her homeland while supporting humanitarian aid in the region. Reference Recordings is donating 100% of the proceeds from this album to those affected by war.
The versatile Shpachenko is known for her powerful playing with unusual sonic qualities and instrumentation. Accompanying the music, the booklet, music videos and galleries also feature artwork by Ukrainian artists* and children from Kharkiv processing their reaction to the events.
All of the music was composed by Lewis Spratlan, a longtime collaborator of Shpachenko's and a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer. The key piece of this album, "Invasion" (for piano, alto saxophone, horn, trombone, timpani, snare drum and mandolin) is his personal response to the events of the war. Furthermore, several world premiere recordings of solo piano music can be found on this recording, which concludes with the outstanding composition "Wonderer".
