"I myself consider the Symphony to be the best, but above all the most sincere of all my works. I love it as I have never loved any of my other musical creations," Tchaikovsky said of his Sixth Symphony. With an "enigmatic programme" and an unusual sequence of movements, the Russian composer created a unique work that has become one of his most popular orchestral works due to the high emotionality and rhythmic vitality of the music. However, the Sixth Symphony, later nicknamed "Pathétique", did not begin its triumphant march through the concert halls until after its creator was no longer alive: Tchaikovsky died just a few days after its premiere in October 1893, at the age of 53.
This 2015 recording is a brilliant interpretation of the Pathétique, performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Manfred Honeck. Manfred Honeck has been Music Director of the world-famous orchestra since the 2008/2009 season, and his successful work in Pittsburgh has been extensively documented in recordings for the Reference Recordings and Exton labels. This release is the fifth in Reference Recordings' "Pittsburgh Live!" series featuring Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Also included is the world premiere recording of the "Rusalka Fantasy", an orchestral suite from Dvorak's opera "Rusalka".
