This recording by the Austrian conductor was made in 2018 at the Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts in Pittsburgh. In the very personal liner notes in the accompanying booklet, Maestro Honeck provides an insight into the history and musical structure of Bruckner's last composition. He describes how he interprets the masterpiece as a conductor and quotes Bruckner biographer Max Auer: "The Ninth Symphony surpasses all its predecessors in grandeur and consecration. If Arthur Schopenhauer describes art as the image of an idea, but music as an idea in itself, then Bruckner's Schwanengesang appears to us as an idea of the beyond, of the divine itself. From the very beginning of the first movement, one feels surrounded by the twilight of a Gothic cathedral - a mood that frees us from the heaviness and weariness of matter and leads us into the hereafter".
