The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and its music director Manfred Honeck present Ludwig van Beethoven's 5th and 7th symphonies on their new album. Honeck, who has been Music Director in Pittsburgh since the 2008/2009 season, writes about the recording: "It is interesting to note that there have been surprisingly few CD recordings of Beethoven's Fifth and Seventh Symphonies in the United States in recent years. Yet a Beethoven recording is always a major event. The combination of historic interpretation, brilliant orchestral playing and fantastic engineering by the production company Soundmirror made this recording possible, compiled from three live concerts in December 2014. It was a pleasure to delve deep into Beethoven's composition, to understand the meaning and content of the music, and thus the reason for its composition. For me, this is always the best part of the creative process."
Following the recording of Anton Bruckner's Fourth Symphony in spring 2015, the new album is the fourth in a series of multichannel hybrid SACDs on Reference Recordings' FRESH! label with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Manfred Honeck. The orchestra is embarking on a major European tour with its music director in 2016, giving 14 concerts in four countries: Germany, Austria, Belgium and Switzerland. Soloists on the tour include Daniil Trifonov, Martin Grubinger, Leonidas Kavakos and Anne Sophie Mutter.
