Lemmy Kilmister had already been the driving force behind Motörhead for 16 years when the recordings for "1916" were made in 1991. Over the years, there had been plenty of changes among the band members - in fact, Kilmister was the only one from the original lineup. Still, the band's sound had hardly changed, and the years had done nothing to diminish the appeal of their steamhammer sound. As sobering as the reflections on the horrors of World War 1 in the title track may be, songs like "Going to Brazil," "Angel City" (an ode to the beautiful and wealthy partygoers of Los Angeles) and "Ramones" (a reverence to the New York punk band) are naturally entertaining and enjoyable. Whether the theme is just pure fun or more serious, "1916" is one of Motörhead's most inspired records.
