This 1972 album is one of the best releases of the CTI label. Playing in Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood studio, vibraphonist Milt Jackson was joined by Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass), Billy Cobham (drums), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Ralph McDonald (percussion) and Jay Berliner (guitar). The jazzers are accompanied by an exquisite chamber orchestra conducted by Don Sebesky.
Jackson's "For Someone I Love" opens the set. A flamenco solo by Berliner kicks things off before vibraphone, trumpet and chamber orchestra paint the backdrop against which a blues ballad gains texture and momentum. Michel Legrand's "What Are You Doing for the Rest of Your Life" sets a fantastic stage for Jackson, whose solo sets the arrangement. Ron Carter's funky, rousing bass and Herbie Hancock's Rhodes piano set the tone for Thom Bell's "People Make the World Go Round." And Hubbard's "Sunflower" starts with a Latin backbeat, only to change tempo later during the solos, demonstrating the trumpet's harmonic range.
