Guitarist Melvin Taylor's flowing, elegantly constructed solos and understated but engaging vocals are surprisingly effective on this nine-track set from 1984, recorded for Isabel Records. Taylor is neither a fancy nor a captivating singer; his success comes from the simple but effective delivery of his lyrics and the slight modulations and nuances of his voice. His guitar playing is impressive, with gliding riffs, alternating runs and brilliant solos. Organist and pianist Lucky Peterson is an excellent second soloist, sometimes contributing clever phrasing in the background, then coming to the fore to challenge or support Taylor's playing with his own dazzling playing.
