It's surprising how brilliantly Keb' Mo's cover versions of nine classic protest and peace songs on "Peace ... Back By Popular Demand" fit into the current political milieu. In this album, the songs themselves are the stars, and Keb' Mo' wisely approaches each of them quietly and moderately, giving the messages precedence over a light soul-jazz background with just enough funk in the interlude of horns to give the arrangement a bit of oomph.
It's difficult to say anything about the song choices, but as a performer Mo' rarely makes any of these songs his own, behind each one is crystal clear the memory of the original version. Obviously Mo' is not trying to get to number one on the charts here by any means, and his effort to put these important songs in a new light is commendable. "Peace...Back by Popular Demand" is not one of the great albums, but it has some important things to tell us, or in this case, to reiterate, and serves as a reminder that every era can use and deserves peace.
