If he was usually on the road with the "Modern Jazz Quartet", the pianist John Lewis shows his talent on "A Wonderful World of Jazz" once with other strong musicians. The 1961 recording will please die-hard fans of old-time jazz as well as new listeners; subtly swinging and melodic. A highlight is definitely the quarter-hour interpretation of "Body & Soul", in which tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves plays one of his strongest solos.
