Shortly after the revolutionary album "Tijuana Moods", "East Coasting" was recorded, but never made it to equal fame. The record company Betlehem chose the name "East Coasting" to distinguish it from the then popular "West Coast Jazz", but Mingus clearly positioned himself against pigeonholing.
A special feature on this album is the participation of pianist Bill Evans, who makes a great contribution to the set, consisting of five originals plus the standard "Memories of You." In addition to Evans, the session is played by Mingus' "regular accompaniment," consisting of Clarence Shaw, Shafi Hadi (a.k.a. Curtis Porter), Jimmy Knepper and Dannie Richmond.
