When Eva Taylor heard the Swedish band Maggie's Blue Five for the first time during a concert in Copenhagen, she was certain: “I've never heard a band play classic jazz from the 1920s like this before!” Shortly afterwards, Eva Taylor and Maggie's Blue Five were already touring Scandinavia together. This is how the present concert recording came about, which Jan-Eric Persson still considers unique today! Persson recalls: "It was one of those magical nights at the Pawnshop when a young lady of 81 captivated and enchanted the audience with her incomparable stage presence and vibrant personality. I think ‘magic’ would be the word that first comes to mind in connection with this recording." Opus 3 Records has managed to preserve this magic on this recording! Eva Taylor embodies the great era of jazz. She sang with the Clarence Williams Blue Five, Louis Armstrong, and Sidney Bechet. Behind her congenial backing band for this live recording is once again the great Tomas Örnberg, who, together with the Swedish Jazz Kings, is one of the world's leading representatives of the genre.
"Eva Taylor's style is based on the tradition of the first half of the century. The recording technology, however, was modern and captured Taylor and her band Maggies Blue Five extremely realistically. No detail is omitted, no turn of phrase goes unnoticed.“ (Matthias Böde, STEREO 9/2007)
The recordings for ”The Legendary Eva Taylor With Maggies Blue Five“ were made at the Stockholm jazz club ‘Stampen’ – better known internationally as ”The Pawnshop." Jan-Eric Persson recorded this concert in March 1976 on behalf of the record company Kenneth Records. Although this recording was released by Kenneth Records on LP, it was not available in a digital format and had been out of print for over two decades. Those responsible at Kenneth Records were therefore all the more delighted with Persson's idea of remastering this concert as an SACD. The outstanding Multichannel Hybrid SACD from Opus 3 Records contains a booklet with detailed information about the recording technology and microphones used.
Opus 3 is an independent Swedish music label dedicated to recording timeless acoustic music such as jazz, blues, folk and classical. Founded in late 1976 by sound engineer Jan-Eric Persson, the label has made it its mission to reproduce voices and instruments as naturally as possible. To achieve this, Opus 3 selects recording environments with good natural. The label's recording techniques were developed specifically for acoustic music and were originally based on the use of tube gear and “Blumlein” miking. In 2001, Opus 3 switched to digital eight-track technology and later to 16 channels – in the brand-new mixing and mastering studio designed and set up by Sweden's leading acoustic engineer Lennart Nilsson to mark the label's 30th anniversary. Apart from a few digital intermediate steps all processing is still done exclusively analog.
