The outlaw movement brought a new wind to the stagnating country music scene in the 1970s. Johnny Cash had paved the way for it, and musicians like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Tompall Glaser, with their simple but lively arrangements, brought renewed vigor to the genre, which had recently become lost in increasingly lifeless and unoriginal productions. At the height of outlaw country, Nelson then broke with all expectations and produced an album: with pop standards. Going five times platinum, his interpretation of Kurt Weill, Hoagy Carmichael and Irving Berlin songs became a resounding success.
Folk and country were not entirely off the table on "Stardust," however. Songs like "Georgia on My Mind," "All of Me," "Moonlight in Vermont" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" are unmistakably Nelson. Produced by Stax legend Booker T. Jones, the album rings with new warmth, greater stage breadth and a clearly contoured singer's voice in the RTI pressing for the Silver label series for Mobile Fidelity. The lacquer cut was performed by Paul Stubblebine.
