There's no doubt about it: “The Captain And Me” is the album that made the Doobie Brothers superstars! Building on the commercial success of “Toulouse Street,” the band's third album, which spent a full year on the charts after its release in March 1973, contains a collection of classics – not to mention a perfect balance of rock songs and soft ballads that underscores the chemistry within the group and their songwriting talent. More than two million copies sold, two massive singles, and a spot in the top 10 of the charts did more than that: “The Captain And Me” put the band on the path to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and secured them a permanent place as one of the greatest bands of their time. Incidentally, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter of Steely Dan can be heard as a guest musician on the pedal steel, who officially became a member of the Doobie Brothers the following year. Another important reason for the album's timeless charm is pianist Bill Payne: the member of Little Feat can be heard on five tracks here.
No wonder “The Captain And Me” is considered one of the quintet's most characteristic works. The album, which moves between Tom Johnston's harder contributions and Patrick Simmons' rustic excursions, displays a breathtaking variety of harmonies and rhythms. The sophisticated stylistic combinations belie the Doobies' roots as a bar band from Northern California that played afternoon jam sessions for members of the Hells Angels, showing that the self-assured collective is on par with mainstream colleagues such as the Eagles and the Allman Brothers Band. Of course, the Top 15 hit “China Grove” and the Top 10 hit “Long Train Runnin'” are the highlights of the album. Each of these pop-rock classics rides unforgettable guitar riffs into the sunset. Each one evokes the liberating feeling of wind in your hair and three-day weekends. The Doobie Brothers' music is fun... and it grooves like hell!
MFSL is proud to present “The Captain And Me” in audiophile reference quality: mastered from the original tapes at MoFi Studio in California, manufactured by Fidelity Record Pressing and housed in a luxurious gatefold sleeve by Stoughton Printing, this numbered double LP (180 grams, 45 RPM) offers the best sound quality the album has ever had on vinyl and sets new standards in terms of three-dimensionality, transparency and dynamics. MoFi’s reissue finally does justice to Ted Templman's excellent production in terms of sound: The organic feeling of “The Captain And Me” shows why countless listeners remain loyal to the recordings of the 1970s.
