With their fifth album "Heartbeat City", The Cars released one of the trend-setting, big pop albums of the eighties in 1984, recorded their biggest commercial success and finally became superstars. This success was certainly also due in part to the band's music videos. With the meteoric rise of MTV, videos had become an important marketing tool, and The Cars were one of the first bands to skillfully use the new medium. The group from Boston released several imaginative clips for their five single releases from "Heartbeat City" and landed in the upper regions of the charts with all singles.
The most successful tracks were "Drive" and "You Might Think," whose video clip earned much acclaim and won the first MTV Award for "Video Of The Year." However, thanks to the clever songwriting of bandleader Ric Ocasek and the perfect production of Robert John "Mutt" Lange, it is easy to imagine all the tracks of the album as a single hit, because "Heartbeat City" contains ten great, catchy songs that, unlike some other production from that time, do not sound outdated and obsolete.
Remastered by Shawn R. Britton for Mobile Fidelity from the original tapes, "Hearbeat City" is available as a limited edition hybrid SACD with sequential serial number.
