Formed as a student band, the B-52s took their name from Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson's extremely coiffed hair, which bore a strong resemblance to the nose of the aircraft of the same name. 1989's Cosmic Thing was the band's biggest commercial success - and their comeback album following the death of band member Ricky Wilson. Chart hits Cosmic Thing, Love Shack and Roam are still played today.
However, critics agree that Deadbeat Club, an unusually thoughtful song for a dance album, is the album's most important track. The B-52s never claimed to produce great music, and Cosmic Thing became known not for its outstanding arrangements, but for its ability to spread good vibes and get even the most jaded club-goer on the dance floor.
The MFSL reissue comes in a gatefold cover with printed lyrics and is sonically on a level that the original release could never come close to. Open, airy and with dry bass, it's a feast for any system.
