Opinions are divided on On The Corner. Recorded and released in 1972, Miles Davis aimed the album at the young, black audience, most of whom had lost interest in jazz. But it sold poorly and was mercilessly slammed by critics. Only in retrospect did the music world appreciate his visionary ideas and approach.
Davis was looking for a music without borders, for a kind of universal sound of the world. To this end, he invited fellow musicians such as Roy Badal, an Indian tabla player, Michael Henderson, Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock and saxophonist Dave Liebman. He had them all play in the sessions, collected the resulting streams of sound and edited them together at the end. Jazz fans who were looking for fine structures, refined arcs of tension and artful solos could only be disappointed here. But this album had nothing to do with jazz in the first place.
The remastering of the hybrid SACD by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab was done by Rob LoVerde. Limited edition with consecutive serial number.
