"Bitches Brew" shattered conventions, changed music history and, forty years after its creation, remains far ahead of its time. "Listen to This" was the working title of the album - and this invitation and request is still the best way to approach the work: with open ears. For the 1970 recording, Miles Davis assembled "the best rock 'n' roll band ever heard" with musicians such as Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Airto, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Don Alias, Bennie Maupin, Larry Young and Lenny White.
In the studio, Davis arranged the participants in a semicircle around him, directing their tempo, solos and contributions with vague cues. The decision to use two, sometimes three, drummers and two bass players placed rhythm at the centre of the music. A galaxy of melodies emerged from the collective improvisations and interplay, which were later put together by producer Ted Macero. Remastered by Shawn R. Britton for the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, this recording is now finally available in top quality. The hybrid double SACD is released in a limited edition with consecutive serial numbering and includes a booklet with extensive liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason.
