Country blues was a forgotten genre of old in 1994 and seemed to have died with Robert Johnson. Keb' Mo', whose real name is Kevin Moore, impersonated his character in a television documentary and took a liking to the archaic musical style. With his debut album, the music style suddenly became hip again, because Keb' Mo' added elements of gospel and R&B and thus made the decisive step into the modern age.
The individual songs are like diamonds in the rough, just waiting for a final polish, and perhaps this is what makes the album so appealing. Fast as well as quiet numbers let you dream of dusty southern landscapes and thus set this variant of the blues quite clearly apart from Delta blues or West Coast blues. The MFSL variant sounds as if freed from a veil without drifting into excessive presence. Sound tip for blues listeners with audiophile aspirations.
The MFSL re-issue comes as a 180g LP with consecutive serial number and was re-cut by Krieg Wunderlich.
