"Blue" is considered the most important album by folk-pop legend Joni Mitchell and is revered as a singer-songwriter reference, as evidenced by its high rankings on many prestigious lists. Predominantly accompanied by minimalist acoustic guitar, piano and dulcimer, Mitchell's beautiful voice takes centre stage on this intense album that runs the gamut of emotions. Born in Canada in 1943, the songwriter looks back on an eventful life and explores profound themes in songs such as 'Little Green' and 'A Case Of You'.
Originally released in 1971, this is the first audiophile reissue of this wonderful piece of music history.
MFSL's one-step LP boxes set the standard for audiophile reissues and are even higher in quality than other productions from the world's most famous remastering studio. The original analogue tape was converted into a 4xDSD file by MFSL's sound engineers, after individually adjusting the tape's track position and bias setting for each track. This was then used to create the lacquer cut in the Sebastopol studio. The special feature of the LPs is not only the new carbon-free vinyl granulate used at RTI in Camarillo, but also the one-step LP production process. The only place you can get close to the sound of the master tape is at the MFSL studio in California.
This means the following: In normal LP production, the lacquer cut is transformed into an initial "father stamp with inverted groove structure". This is then used to create a "mother stamp" with the correct groove structure. This is then used to create the actual press stamp with the inverted groove structure, which is used to press the actual LP with the correct groove structure. This approach makes it possible to press almost any number of LPs with just one lacquer cut.
The one-step process makes this much easier: the actual lacquer cut itself is converted directly into the press stamp used to produce the LP, eliminating two steps of mechanical conversion.Unfortunately, only a limited number of LPs can be produced with each lacquer cut, so if more than a few hundred LPs are to be produced, several lacquer cuts are required. MFSL's motto is that a new set of stamps should be used for every 500 copies. This means that for a run of 7,500 copies, fifteen sets of four lacquer cuts are used. However, as things can sometimes go wrong in production, 18 sets are usually made. This means that 72 lacquer cuts are made for the double LP.By hand, one after the other. Every day, the lacquer cuts are flown by express to RTI for rework, and then a test press has to be made for each side and listened to in the MFSL studio. This is a time-consuming and expensive process, resulting in an expensive product and a high demand from collectors. The record is delivered in an elaborate box. The serial number is hand-written on the back. MFSL states that there will be no further reprints.
This edition is limited to 12,000 copies.
