“Supergroups” existed even before Emerson, Lake & Palmer was formed in 1970. And many came after them. But few, if any, could match the chemistry of the British trio and their unique combination of virtuosity, vision and energy. Emerson, Lake & Palmer's third studio album, “Trilogy” is brimming with sophisticated arrangements, rich overdubs and multi-layered colors that underscore the band's willingness to experiment. “Trilogy” distills the unbridled power of its predecessors into a more accessible whole, making it the most representative example of the ensemble's characteristic style. “Trilogy” went gold, reached No. 2 on the UK charts and No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and the single “From The Beginning” reached No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The members of ELP put themselves to the test as musicians and songwriters, using “Trilogy” as a springboard for excursions into adventurous landscapes that required skillful navigation through tricky twists and turns and the ability to change direction at any moment. Released in 1972, the work eschews a conceptual character and demonstrated one thing above all else: no other band at the time combined classical, rock, jazz and even proto-metal themes in this way. No collective possessed the equivalent of Emerson, Lake and Palmer's individual technique and symmetrical chemistry. “Trilogy” is also a showcase for the talent of sound engineer Eddy Offord, who ended his collaboration with ELP after this project, but left behind a groundbreaking production. Unsurprisingly, the group stopped playing some of the pieces live, as they were frustrated at not being able to reproduce many parts on stage. The graduated level of complexity and intricacy even prompted ELP to write songs on the follow-up album Brain Salad Surgery that could be reproduced faithfully live.
Lovingly mastered from the original tapes at MoFi's California studio and packaged in a mini LP-style gatefold sleeve, this Hybrid SACD presents this classic in audiophile reference quality for the first time: With spectacular three-dimensionality and attention to detail, this collectible reissue honors the trio's perfectionist approach, which shaped both the musical interplay and the recording of the album. The strictly numbered Hybrid SACD from MFSL showcases the visionary depth and virtuoso musicality of the album as it deserves! The MFSL edition comes with the iconic cover, which is intended to depict the physical resemblance of the band members. Designed by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell at Hipgnosis after Salvador Dali reportedly demanded a fortune for the commission, the image conveys the philosophical qualities that emerge in the music and narratives, which Keith Emerson summed up in an interview at the time as “progressive rock with a lot of respect for the past.”
